Shrewsbury Canal

Route

History

The Shrewsbury Canal was built to transport coal from the east Shropshire Coalfield to the county town, Shrewsbury. At Trench it connected with the tub boat network that served local industry.


Archaeology

There were a number of notable features including, Berwick Tunnel, SJ536115 which was the first to have a towpath through it, the world's earliest survivng cast-iron aqueduct at Longdon-on-Tern SJ617155 the use of guillotine gates at the tail end of the locks and the use of an inclined plane at the junction with the Wombridge Canal.
